Ian Rankin: There's Nothing Crime Fiction Can't Do
Tremendous interview with Ian Rankin over at Literary Hub today, in which I'm honoured to get a name check alongside Eva Dolan, Adrian McKinty, Stuart Neville and Anthony Horowitz.
Rankin also admires fellow UK crime fiction writer Sarah Hilary. “I’ve got her new one here, Quieter Than Killing.
I’m a big fan of her books. She’s very good on social issues, all the stuff we’ve just been talking about. Her first one was a murder mystery centered around a refuge for victims of domestic violence, and she makes you think about the way the world is. You know, trying to address the questions of, ‘My god, why does this stuff happen?’ Another writer, Eva Dolan, does very similar things with social issues. I love all these young writers, these young whippersnappers.” Really? That’s what you call them? Rankin laughs. “Well, not to their faces.”

Dangerous Women Project
Do read this piece I wrote for the Dangerous Women Project about the extraordinary courage of my grandmother, who inspires so much of what I do. It contains one of my happiest memories, as well as personal reflections on pain, loss and survival.

Rules of #WriteClub for Writing.ie
On New Year's Eve, I tweeted my top tips for writing, getting an agent and being published. The hashtag #WriteClub started trending and @writing_ie asked me to write the tweets into a feature for their 'Resources for Writers'.
So here, for the first time in one place, are my #WriteClub Rules. Do share some of your own.
- Don’t talk about it. Do it. Write everyday, even if it’s just a blog entry. Work that muscle.
- Know when to stop. Between the first and second drafts crucially, but also for Thinking Time. Let the story breathe—that’s when it will come alive.
- Be curious. Be in the world. Keep your eyes and ears open for stories. Be critical. Ask awkward questions.
- Embrace Rejection. This rule is crucial. You’ll never know how well you can write until you’ve been made to try harder.
