Reader, I rogered him

It occurs to me that only women have Guilty Pleasures. Men have Appetites (to the extent of that being a legal defence from time to time). Not only must we feel guilty, as a sex, about our pleasures but there is a clear hierarchy of guilt. We are encouraged to indulge our loveably weak natures when it comes to chocolate, shoes, shopping and so on. You can see how Chick Lit took off, can't you? Sex, qua sex, is not generally encouraged unless one has the ditzy ineptitude of a Bridget Jones, who is surely the prime example of how a woman might 'fall pregnant' (presumably she slipped and landed on his appendage). Women who read and write pornography (or to give it its Sunday name, erotica) are as a rule positioning themselves beyond the pale pastel paintbox of Chick Lit, entering an altogether darker arena. I do wonder, though, whether the chocolate and the shoes and the shopping would be quite so prevalent were we to allow women a genuine indulgence, even if only once a month. Shocking of me to suggest it, I'm sure, but there we are. Anyway, enough stirring at the murky waters with my dirty stick, have a little light porn to start the day. Nothing too scary, mind. It is Tuesday, however, and "erotica" has such a bad reputation. I prefer to call this porn. Just published (and paid for) by Big Pulp. A flash called Every Time's the First. Oh and it's gay porn. I'll get my coat, shall I?

Sarah, that was a great story. I love love love the way you write.

Thanks, Gay! I wrote it - oh, such a long time ago. Big Pulp snapped it up but have taken a while to publish it. Glad you liked it so much.

Thanks, Melanie, it's lovely to have a new reader (or do we know one another already?).

I think from Anaïs Nin to Erica Jong, we're more used than you'd think on women writing straight porn. It's the gay porn by women that's still - sometimes hilariously - unrecognised. And yet nobody needs much explained about men's interest in lesbian scenes...

Perfectly put, Shezan. I was hoping someone would mention Anaïs Nin. I always want to throw her name in the ring when female writers of erotica get the prissy end of the stick from fellow authors. Thanks!

Am I greedy for wanting the chocolate and the shopping AND the porn? And, you know, not just once every month.

Great story! I've read it before, I think, and I still like it just as much as I did then.

Hi Claudia, no reason you can't Have it All, but I forbid you from feeling guilty! Thanks for reading and commenting.

Sorry, hon, but that's just not porn in my book. Porn is gratuitous and, while there's nothing wrong with a bit of gratuitous porn on a Tuesday morning, your story was brilliant, well-crafted, original and the sex was necessary to the story. So not porn, but a fantastic story with sex. But we won't call it 'Erotica'.

And I totally agree with your post - you only have to look at the shelves of magazines aimed at women to make you want to sit on the floor of your local Co-op and cry.

Aw, thanks, Jen. I tend to agree with Laurence O'Toole who wrote that "Porn is like Pot Noodle" - just dry ingredients to which the reader/viewer brings the boiling water of their desire/imagination. Thank you for not calling it Erotica, and for the lovely things you said about the story.

Oh and I wrote a story called Porn is Like Pot Noodle, published in Red Peter:

Thanks again and, yes, women's magazines. I despair. That and the sycophantic homage we're all supposed to pay to Gok Wan... Grrr!!

That is beautifully written. I agree with Jenzarina, not porn but art with words. Thanks.

Thank you, Lowen, that's lovely to hear.
